Linda Rasmussen was a teacher to the end.     Article by:  Mary Lynn Smith                     Star Tribune, October 16, 2010 – 5:56 PM

When doctors told Linda Rasmussen she probably only had two months to live, they had no idea who they were dealing with.

The marathon runner and eternal optimist, a longtime biology teacher and running coach at Osseo High School, took the brain tumor and the cancer diagnosis in stride.  Cancer was an inconvenience, she said, not a problem. “Her dream was to be the Lance Armstrong of beating cancer,” said her husband, Ken, of Maple Grove.  But on Monday, after defying odds for 4 ½ years, Linda Rasmussen died at age 59. For those who knew her, it not about how Linda Rasmussen died, but how she lived while dying.  “We always viewed the illness like a marathon race,” her husband said.  Her battle became a larger-than-life lesson for her students and her athletes.  “When you watch your coach going through a battle like this, you get a different perspective on things,” he said.  “She showed them how to be a fighter, an optimist.  She showed them you take things head on, give it your best shot and see if you can beat it.

Long before the cancer took her, Rasmussen had endeared herself to her students and her athletes.  As a teacher, she listened without judgment.  “She didn’t come across as a know-it-all,” her husband said.  “She let kids learn in a way that the bulb would go off.”   With her runners, she was both coach and mother.  She knew when to counsel, when to push and when to use humor.  On their annual camping trip, she taught the track girls to belly dance.  “She was always a burst of energy,” said 2009 graduate Tina Ewing.  “If I was having the worst of worst days, she would put a smile on my face.” Linda Rasmussen’s ability to lead by example became even more striking when she got sick.  Her strength, determination, optimism, never faltered even while undergoing months of chemotherapy and radiation.  She smiled, she worked out and she coached.  Eventually, the brain tumor was gone, Ken Rasmussen said.  “She had a little spot on her lung, but they didn’t think it would hurt her,” he said.  But in May, signs that the cancer was taking hold became evident.  By mid-summer, she had to stop running.  Still, she went to the gym every day and used a cane to walk the track.  The cancer “accelerated so quickly the last six weeks,” her husband said “She went from running to walking to using a wheelchair to being bedridden.”The Osseo cross country team dedicated its season to her, wearing T-shirts emblazoned with “We run for Ras” on the front and the back, they carried her words of inspiration: “Live Well–Love fully—Never Give Up on Your Dreams."   "Sometimes you don't know how many people have been touched by a life until they died," Rasmussen said as he sorted through hundreds of emails from athletes, former athletes, students and former students.

Becky Little Hinz

Becky Lee Hinz, 66, of Eau Claire passed away November 1, 2018, at home with her family by her side. She was born December 1, 1951, to Robert L. Stevenson and the late Vicky L. Little.

Becky graduated from Robbinsdale High School of Minnesota, then obtained a degree in International Trade, and worked in that field for many years.

She was a loving, caring, and loyal wife, mother, and friend. She married the love of her life, Paul Hinz, in 1998 and assisted him with the management of their business, Sparkle Wash.

They were rarely apart and never tired of each other’s company. They enjoyed traveling across the country in their big truck, eating local cuisine, and making new friends.

Another major love for both of them was music; he playing it and she dancing to it. They both loved trivia and their days were highlighted by completing their morning crossword puzzle, followed by watching the afternoon episodes of Jeopardy.

Becky was an amazing chef and her family and friends always looked forward to hearing what the evening’s menu was to be and how the latest recipe turned out, not to mention sampling her creations.

Her greatest accomplishment was raising her two children, Michelle and Eric. She herself was an honest, loyal, compassionate, and intelligent person and it was very important to her to instill these values in her children.

She gave them unconditional love and provided a sense of security and comfort that they could depend on from her.

Becky’s pride and joy were her two granddaughters, Gabrielle and Audrey Cernjar. She looked forward to their weekend visits when they would all cuddle up to watch a movie, do some cooking and baking together, and their annual birthday shopping trips. She never tired of showing off their photos and telling of their latest achievements.

Although she fought five long years against cancer, for us, it was still too soon. We will miss her every day and are thankful for all that she shared with us and taught us.

She is survived by her husband Paul Hinz; daughter, Michelle (Terry) Demars; son, Eric (Erin) Cernjar; and granddaughters, Gabrielle and Audrey Cernjar. She is further survived by her father, Robert L. Stevenson (Vicky Suby); sister, Pamela (Gary) Postel; brother, Clayton (Marcia) Little; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Mark Stevenson; her mother, Vicky Little; and her step-father, John Little.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2pm Friday November 9, 2018, at Chippewa Valley Cremation Services - Celebration of Life Center, 1717 Devney Dr., Altoona WI

Cory's love for his family knew no bounds and he rejoiced in time spent with the grandkids. He loved his friends, whether from grade school, high school, college, work life or the neighborhood. He accepted everyone he met as an equal and a potential friend. He was a wordsmith and loved a good pun or play on words. His rapid retorts took many by surprise. He had a lifelong love of all music genres (except maybe opera) and enjoyed nothing more than sharing that love with others. It wasn't an event if Cory hadn't made a CD for you to commemorate the day. Cory spent many years designing residential remodeling projects with Sawhorse Designers and Builders. He helped many homeowners realize their dream projects. Cory was preceded in death by his parents, Vivian and Joseph Miskowic and his brother, Kerby Olson. A little of the music of our lives has gone quiet with his passing.

David enjoyed volunteering, especially at the Courage Center where for years he escorted wheelchair-bound residents to the State Fair. You can be sure that between his big personality and love of all things food, that those were memorable outings for all! David enjoyed his time and a large circle of friends from his many years as a member at Golden Valley Country Club. He was endeared by the staff and the members. His passion for golf (although he died thinking a 12-hole course would be plenty) saw him travel to golf destinations around the world with his pals from the club. David will be remembered for his endless acts of kindness, his wonderful sense of humor, and the joy he brought to both friends and strangers. Barry Anderson

Barry P. Anderson age 71 of Tonka Bay passed away Thursday, April 21, 2022.

Memorial Service 11:00 AM Saturday, May 7, 2022, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church (301 CR 19) in Excelsior with Pastor Brenda Legred as officiant.  Gathering of family and friends one hour prior to the service.   A reception will follow the service.

Serving as urn bearers Rob Weidman and Andy Quiring.

Barry Paul Anderson was born to Stanley and Phyllis (Nelson) Anderson in 1951 and grew up with his older brother Mark and younger siblings Chris, Dane, and Mary. His life took a turn for the amazing in 1962 when Stan and Phyllis purchased a log cabin on Bay Lake in Deerwood, Minnesota. Barry told his mother at a young age, “I do all my best breathing at Bay Lake.” When he learned to drive, he was known to make the trip from Golden Valley in record time.

Barry graduated from Robbinsdale High School in 1969. He began studying at the Institute of Technology at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities before switching to a hospitality major. After having worked several positions at Ruttger’s Bay Lake Lodge in Deerwood, Minn., Barry was made the General Manager of the resort in his twenties. A folder in his office absolutely bursts with effusive thank you notes from both companies and families, who all praised Barry’s attention to the tiniest of details and his impeccable customer service. He delighted in providing piping hot delicious meals and foolproof waterski instructions to people young and old.

Barry was quite fond of wooden boats and found so much joyriding around in his Higgins and his Century Arabian. It was at Bay Lake that he met his wife Andrea and made several lifelong “Bay Laker” friends.

Andrea and Barry were married in 1980 at Diamond Lake Lutheran Church in Minneapolis and honeymooned on the Gunflint Trail. They bought a perfectly white and red cottage on Bay Lake, and in the 1980s became parents to Kelsey, Annika, and Amy. Barry loved sitting cross-legged on the floor with his girls, reading to them, playing games, and chatting. They moved to Clearwater Lake in 1986, where Barry pulled waterskiers and bob-skidders in loops all day long. After dinner, the girls would beg to go “bouncing” in Big Blue, their Slickcraft. He was a master bonfire builder.

While the girls were still young, Barry began working at Professional Instruments in Hopkins, and the family moved to Tonka Bay, to a house with two apple trees and just a one-block walk to the beach. They joined Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, where Barry ended up putting his restaurant management skills to good use. He fed dinner to all the confirmation students and leaders every Wednesday for many years.

Little kids gravitated to Barry, especially his five grandchildren. He lovingly amassed a collection of matchbox cars with tracks, model boats (of course), and firetrucks so he could sit back and watch Drew, Owen, Arthur, Linnea, and Zoey play. He read them book after book after book. For many years he and Andrea watched Drew and Owen after school and graciously watched Wild Kratts and Odd Squad at the dinner table.

Barry and Andrea loved the North Shore and spent time on the trails and resorts along the Gunflint Trail. Barry flew through thousands of books on his Kindle, often reading an author’s entire book list back to back. He also enjoyed watching the weekend cooking shows on PBS. Barry loved to cook, and has left treasured notes in the margins of his recipe pages. His meatballs and meatloaf were beloved by all, but especially his grandkids. On Sundays Barry and Andrea would visit her parents and bring apple pie, chocolate cake, or key lime bars. Jack would say, “You outdid yourself again, Barry.” In his final days, Barry told Andrea that he could smell heaven and that it smelled like apple pie. He couldn’t wait to “go home.”

Barry retired in October 2021 and spent lots of time reading. He had a final visit to Bay Lake this winter and spent time with his beloved siblings. All who knew Barry will miss his calm and loving presence, his gentle voice, and his affectionate hugs.

Barry is preceded in death by his parents Stanley and Phyllis Anderson; brother Mark Anderson; father-in-law and mother-in-law Jack and Marilyn Landberg; brothers-in-law Richard Landberg, John Landberg, and Mike Landberg.

Barry is survived by his loving family: wife Andrea Anderson; children Kelsey (Andrew) Quiring of Chanhassen, Annika Anderson of Minneapolis, Amy (Robert) Weidman of Chanhassen; grandchildren Drew, Owen, Arthur, Linnea, and Zoey; brothers and sister Christian (Barbara) Anderson of Shoreview, Dane Anderson of New Hope, Mary (Bradley) Coomes of Plymouth; sister-in-law Barbara Anderson of Woodbury; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends.

Marnee Lou Burnham Bogle

MAY 24, 1951 – JUNE 9, 2023

Obituary of Marnee Lou Bogle

Marnee Lou (Burnham) Bogle passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on June 9th, 2023. Marnee was born on May 24th, 1951 to Richard and Dolores (Reamer) Burnham. Marnee grew up in Robbinsdale, MN graduating from Robbinsdale High School in 1969. She grew up singing in the choir, attending Lake Koronis Bible Camp, playing sports, and enjoying neighborhood friends, and time with family.

She married Don Bogle in June of 1983 and they shared just shy of 40 adventurous years together. They began their life in Minneapolis, MN moving to Grand Rapids, MN in 1990 where they developed a tremendous circle of friends whom they traveled with, laughed with, sang with, and played games with. Upon retirement, Don and Marnee continued their love of travel by touring the country via motorhome, documenting their travels as they went. Marnee loved writing down the details of where they were, what they experienced, and who they met. They often worked odd jobs on the road, creating friendships and memories at each stop. Marnee and Don’s circle of friends expanded yet again when they moved to Arizona in 2002 and planted roots in Venture Out.

Marnee had a smile that lit up a room, while that can be somewhat cliché’, this was indeed the case with her. She was the most genuine, caring person to all she met, whether it was inviting you over for dessert or including you in the current activity. Marnee had a tremendous faith that began as a child and flourished as an adult. She was active in couple’s Bible study, Mission Impact, and sharing her gift of cooking for those in need. She was a member and President of the pickleball club and sat on the board for Venture Out.

She had one biological daughter, Jody, who provided Marnee with four local grandchildren, Hayden, Tucker, Jacoby, and Gianna. She loved being an active part of their daily lives from attending hockey games to piano and band concerts, to dance recitals, to baking. Her heart for these young people was beyond measure. She showed this love to all her extended family in every activity she did with and for them whether they were together or miles apart. This love will continue to resonate through her family for years to come.

Marnee is preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Dolores Burnham, and daughter, Lynn (Bogle) Olkives, and niece, Dayna (McConnell) Esch. She is survived by her dedicated and loving husband, Don; siblings, Marijo (Ken) Krueger, Richard (Doris) Burnham, Steven (Jonelle) Burnham. Children; Don Bogle Jr., Michael Olkives, Susie (Bogle) Case, and Jody (Gabe) Stott. Grandchildren; Sarah (Bogle) Kaweleski, Heather (Andy) Douglass, Nicholas (Natalie) Martensen, Joseph (Alexandra) Olkives, Kyle Roen, Jack Roen, Preston Case, Amber Langefels-Case, Hayden Stott, Tucker Stott, Jacoby Stott and Gianna Stott. Great-grandchildren; Katelynn, Piper, Julia, Lauren, Aylah, Kallianne and Harlow. In addition to an extended family of nieces and nephews Deanne, Darren, Brian, Kristin, and Will to name just a few.

In honor of Marnee, donations in her name to Mission Impact (Mission Church Arizona) to continue God’s ministry locally and globally would be greatly appreciated. An internment service will be held at Kahbakong Cemetery on July 14th, 2023, at 1pm in Taylor’s Falls, Minnesota. Additionally, a celebration of life at Venture Out in Mesa, Arizona, will be planned for the fall/winter 2023 (more details to come). We invite all who knew and loved her to join us in remembering our dear Marnee at either or both locations.

Lloyd J. Wallin, 72, died peacefully at home surrounded by the love of his family on April 20, 2024. Lloyd fought a brave battle against a rare form of blood cancer for three years without complaint. His strength is admired and there is comfort and peace in knowing that Lloyd was able to end his courageous fight on his own terms.

Lloyd was born Nov. 21, 1951, to Vern and Ruth (Krick). He was raised in Golden Valley, Minn. and graduated from Robbinsdale Senior High in 1969. As a young child, Lloyd and the neighborhood kids spent countless hours playing pick-up games of football, basketball, baseball, and hockey. Lloyd’s favorite team sport was hockey. He joined a hockey league with his childhood friends and they were given the nickname the “French Connection” for their dominant scoring ability on the line.

He was also an avid hunter and fisherman during his younger years. He would make many trips to his friend’s hunting cabin where a lot of hunting and cards would take place. True to his goal-setting nature, once he was able to shoot a “massive” buck, he considered his accomplishments as a hunter complete and stepped away from hunting.

Lloyd’s passion for golf grew as a teenager when he began working at the Theodore Wirth Golf Course in Minneapolis. This high school job would evolve into a lifetime love of the sport. Most people who think of Lloyd, think of golf. He was an accomplished golfer and participated in many tournaments throughout the years. After graduating from the University of Minnesota with a degree in mathematics, Lloyd would go on to help design golf courses and it is what brought him to Spring Valley, the town he called home.

In 1980 Lloyd began his career at the Spring Valley Golf Course. He was instrumental in turning the 9-hole course into an 18-hole course. Lloyd worked primarily behind the scenes with the paperwork and financial aspect of the transition of the course. It has also been said that his calm demeanor and ability to mediate others was an essential part in the success of the golf course. Lloyd would spend many years managing and operating the golf course and restaurant.

Lloyd purchased Bill’s Bar in 1996. He spent nine years owning and operating the bar and spent countless hours behind the bar doing what he loved best - storytelling, making jokes and “talking smart.” During his time at Bill’s Bar he continued to build lasting friendships in the community.

Bill’s Bar was sold in 2005 and Lloyd was fortunate enough to enjoy an early retirement. He would use his time to pursue his passion of nature photography and take many adventures near and far trying to capture scenery or wildlife. A few of Lloyd’s impressive travel destinations included the Arctic Circle, American Samoa, Alaska, Hawaii, many Canadian destinations, and a visit to every United States National Park. We are lucky to have thousands of pictures from his journeys to look back on.

Lloyd also enjoyed filling his time with strategic puzzles and games, reading, and playing cards (namely cribbage). However, his greatest joy in life came from spending time with his family. His role as grandpa was what brought him the most joy. He spent as much time as possible with his grandchildren and rarely missed any of their events. Lloyd absolutely adored the time he shared with them. His grandchildren always loved his silly antics – “knee noogies,” “gooshies,” “toe twisters,” and whatever other nonsensical sayings Lloyd would make up to entertain them. He taught them to love and hate Minnesota sports, and we will forever think of him and give an extra ”Skol” when watching our Minnesota Vikings.

We were lucky to love and be loved by Lloyd. As a family we will miss him beyond measure but take comfort in knowing he is pain free and at peace. Our memories will forever be cherished, and we will continue finding ways to carry him with us. He was truly one of a kind. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Eau Claire Mayo Cancer Center, St
